Headache Clinic - Women - London

Women are not alone in struggling to find appropriate treatment solutions for headaches and studies have suggested that women are more likely than men to be treated with sedatives and anti-depressants.

Women may respond differently to these treatments since headaches are affected by hormones as well as the different life stresses we face. Certainly the relationship between hormones and headaches is complex with many women first experiencing headache and migraine during adolescence.

Women are seeking out alternatives to drug and surgical options

“It is estimated that in up to 20% of chronic headache sufferers the condition arises in the neck. The ratio is of 4:1 female disposition and the average age of sufferers is 42.9 years of age. There is no specific pathology on imaging either on X-ray or MRI other than expected age related changes” (Cochrane database systematic review. 2004 ;(3):CD001878).

Hypermobility of the joints including the neck is also more prevalent in women. This leaves you more vulnerable to strain of the upper neck for instance from a whiplash injury. The relationship between hypermobility and migraine has been documented by March et al.1998 and Blau 1999.
