Case 1 - Acute headaches with stabbing pain

Ann developed acute headaches with stabbing pain into the right side of her face. A diagnosis of migraine was initially made but this failed to explain why in her mid fifties these pains were becoming increasingly widespread, frequent, intense and debilitating. Unfortunately medication was decreasingly effective. Examination at the Clinic revealed hypersensitivity of the upper and lower neck, upper back and right shoulder region resulting from a car accident several years earlier. On improving the function of this area, Ann’s condition improved to the extent that the facial symptoms and migraines resolved and could be managed successfully with occasional treatments.

Case 2 - Acute headache

A fifteen year old girl attended the clinic after suffering an acute headache. The GP diagnosed migraine and the girl was advised to take a large dose of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication every time the young girl had a headache to prevent a migraine from developing. This had proved very effective but the parents were becoming concerned about the long-term effects of administering high doses of medication, often several times a week to one so young. On examination at the Clinic, there was excessive tension in the neck and shoulders resulting from an arduous school backpacking holiday. This tension was treated with gentle targeted stretching techniques that resolved the headaches and therefore the need to regularly take high doses of medication.

Case 3 - Tension headaches

A middle-aged man suffering from work related tension headaches was puzzled to understand why his headaches were getting worse despite relaxing each evening in a very hot bath. “Surely heat was good to relieve muscle tension and so relieve headaches”. Examination at the Clinic revealed the heat to be inflaming already strained joints in the neck leading to more not less pressure on the nerves leading to the head. By offering appropriate advice as part of an individual treatment plan, the Clinic was able to provide an effective and sustained solution.

Case 4 - Facial pain

An elderly lady complained of right-sided facial pain daily for over twenty years but only between two and three PM. This pain had received an assortment of diagnoses from chronic daily headaches to trigeminal neuralgia. Further questioning revealed a zealous passion for an apple and piece of cheese each and every lunchtime. Gentle stretching to the jaw released the pressure on the nerve into the face that had been aggravated by chewing the apple thus relieving the condition completely.
